KSC SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT 2/2/93
SPACE SHUTTLE STATUS REPORT
Tuesday, February 2, 1993
George H. Diller
Kennedy Space Center
Vehicle: OV-102/Orbiter Columbia Current location: OPF Bay 2
Primary payload: Spacelab D-2 Crew Size: 7
Orbital altitude: 184 sm Inclination: 28.45 degrees
Mission Duration: 8 days 22 hours
Launch timeframe: NET Feb. 25
Landing site/timeframe: KSC/March 6
STS-55 IN WORK:
- left main landing gear door limit switch troubleshooting
- preparations for rollover expected between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m.
STS-55 WORK COMPLETED:
- orbiter weight and center of gravity determination
- install Columbia on orbiter transporter
WORK SCHEDULED:
- soft mate to external tank/solid rocket booster stack tonight
- hard mate on Wednesday
- Shuttle Interface Test (SIT) starting Thursday
- rollout to Pad 39-A on Sunday at 8 a.m.
ISSUES AND CONCERNS: Engineers have determined that the titanium weld in
question on Columbia's #3 main engine fuel turbopump has acceptable strength
for flight. A changeout of the pump in the VAB will not be necessary.

% NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal awarded to Star Trek creator.
Kennedy Space Center technicians working to prepare Columbia for its upcoming
STS-55 D-2 Spacelab mission report they will roll Columbia to the Vehicle
Assembly Building sometime later today for mating of the orbiter to its
external tank and solid rocket boosters.
Briefings on the mission objectives and science experiments will be held at the
Johnson Space Center tomorrow and Thursday, Feb. 3 and 4. The briefings will
be carried live on NASA Select television, and will begin at 9:30 am EST on
Wednesday.
KSC management will hold its launch readiness review on Monday, Feb. 8. The
NASA Office of Space Flight management's formal Flight Readiness Review will be
held at KSC on Wednesday, Feb. 11. The launch dress rehearsal with the
astronaut and ground launch team crews will take place on Feb. 11 and 12, with
the simulated launch time at 11:00 am EST on Feb. 12.
Preparations on Columbia continue to proceed on a schedule which could allow
the launch of the STS-55 mission in late February. The STS-55 mission is the
second dedicated German research flight; the first was the D-1 mission which
flew on STS-61A in November 1985. This flight is scheduled as an 8-day and
22-hour, seven- crewmember mission with the Spacelab long module and a variety
of scientific discipline investigations. This mission's major Spacelab
facilities will continue the exploration of fluid physics and human
physiological changes in microgravity.

In response to a General Accounting Office report that disclosed cost overruns
in the Space Station Freedom program, NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin said
"NASA is in general agreement with the GAO on this retrospective report, and we
have already initiated numerous reform efforts in procurement and program
management." Goldin also said that he "intends to hold this agency to its
promise and Space Station managers, at all levels, to their obligation to
deliver Freedom on schedule and within the prescribed budget." Goldin concluded
by noting that NASA is committed to giving America a strong and vital space
program that is relevant and cost- effective."

In a ceremony held late last week, Administrator Goldin awarded Gene
Roddenberry, creator of the original Star Trek television series, the NASA
Distinguished Public Service Medal. The posthumous award was made to
Roddenberry's widow, Majel Barrett Roddenberry, in a ceremony at the
Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. The citation on the medal reads "For
distinguished service to the Nation and the human race in presenting the
exploration of space as an exciting frontier and a hope for the future."
Roddenberry died in October 1991, though his series lives on in syndication and
spawned Star Trek - The Next Generation, which recently spawned a series about
a space station called Star Trek - Deep Space Nine.
